DALLAS, Texas -- The 13th-ranked Arizona State men's swimming and diving team is in fourth place after the first day of competition at the 21st annual Dallas Morning News Classic hosted by Southern Methodist. Freshman diver Joona Puhakka registered an exceptional performance for first-place in the 1-meter springboard (391.50), recording a pool record and a meet record. He beat his nearest competitor by over 50 points.

The swimmers were led by Bobby Zaabadich and Ahmed Hussein, who each recorded top-three finishes. Zaabadich was third in the 50 free (20.62) while Hussein earned third-place in the 100 back (49.19). Fourth-place finishes were earned by Nick Brunelli in the 200 free (1:39.39) and David Kolozar in the 100 fly (50.21).

The Dallas Morning News Classic concludes Saturday evening at the Perkins Natatorium in Dallas. Among other events will be the 200 free relay, which will feature California and ASU, two of the top three squads in the country at this event.
