AUSTIN, Texas - Southwest Texas State's Hannah Snow hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to carry the sixth-seeded Bobcats (44-16-1) to a 1-0 upset win over third-seeded Arizona State (30-24) in the opening round game of the NCAA Region 3 Tournament in Austin, Texas.
After only getting one hit through five innings, Arizona State had its best chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Jennifer Forner was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Kristin Farber reached on an infield single. After Kara Brun popped out to right field for the second out, Phelan Wright reached first base to load the bases on an error by the Bobcat's third baseman. Cheryl Evans then struckout swinging to end the base loaded threat.
Except for the sixth inning, SWTS Nicole Neuerberg (32-7) kept the Sun Devils in check with only two hits, one each by Farber and Valerie Sevilla. ASU starter Desiree Serrano (17-15) pitched a solid game, allowing only three hits with seven strikeouts.
Up next, the Sun Devils drop to the elimination bracket and will face the loser of the Northwestern Tennessee Tech game Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. Central.
