Box Score

EUGENE, Ore. - A grand slam highlighted a five run fifth inning to break a scoreless game open and to carry No. 20 Oregon (27-15; 5-9 Pac-10) over No. 12 Arizona State (28-18; 5-9 Pac-10), 5-2, Saturday at Howe Field in Eugene.

With one out, Oregon's Erin Goodell walked, followed by a Breanne Sabol sacrifice bunt, but first baseman Cheryl Evans' throw to second was wide of the bag as both players were safe. Amber Hutchinson then singled to center field to load the bases. ASU starting pitcher Ashley Werschky (7-4) was then replaced by Desiree Serrano, who on her second pitch to Lynsey Haij gave up a grand slam to center field for the 4-0 lead. The Ducks added on their final run when Beth Boskovich followed with a walk and was doubled home by Alyssa Laux for the 5-0 lead.

The Devils did get two runs back in the sixth off Oregon pitcher Amy Harris (13-11) when Phelan Wright hit a two-run home run to left field, her team-leading 14th of the year.

However, that was all the Devils could gain on the Ducks as Andrea Vidlund pitched the final inning of the game for her seventh save of the season.

Kara Brun led ASU with a 2-for-3 game and a run scored. Werschky went four and a third innings, allowing four hits with three runs and five strikeouts. Serrano pitched the final inning and two-thirds with two hits and two runs.

Up next, the Sun Devils will finish the weekend series against Oregon on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
