TUCSON, Ariz. - Top-ranked Arizona (40-4; 9-1 Pac-10) scored five runs in the third inning, twice in the fourth and ended it with one more in the fifth inning to top 12th-ranked Arizona State (28-14; 5-5 Pac-10), 8-0, in five innings Friday night in Tucson.
To begin the game, the Sun Devils and starting pitcher Desiree Serrano (17-8) got out of a no out, bases loaded jam in the first. After two singles and an intentional walk to Lovie Jung to load the bases, Serrano got Mackenzie Vandergeest and Courtney Fossatti each to hit into a fielder's choice to shortstop Kara Brun, who fired home to cut down both runners. Serrano then got Wendy Allen to strikeout swinging to end the bases loaded threat.
However, the Wildcats then struck for five runs, three runs off a Jung home run to left field in the third inning. Pitcher Susan Aguilar replaced Serrano and got one out before giving up a sacrifice fly for one more run and a an RBI double to Michelle Schultz to push the lead to 5-0. Cheryl Evans then replaced Aguilar to record the final out.
UA added on in the fourth when Jung doubled to the right center field gap to drive in Fossatti, who got on off an infield single. Allen then singled to left to drive in Jung for the 7-0 advantage. UA ended the game in the fifth inning with one more run.
Arizona's Alicia Hollowell (26-3) allowed only one hit to Adriana Garcia in the third inning, striking out four.
Up next, the Devils stay in Tucson to close out the two-game set against the Wildcats on Saturday in Tucson at 7:00 p.m.
