TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State softball team (28-13; 5-4 Pac-10) could only get two hits, both by Phelan Wright, and one run off Stanford pitcher Dana Sorensen as the Cardinal (32-15; 4-5 Pac-10) won 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Farrington Stadium.
Stanford posted their first two runs in the third inning when Catalina Morris hit a leadoff two-run home run over the centerfield fence off ASU starter Cheryl Evans (2-3). The Cardinal would tag one more run on in the fifth when Cassi Brangham singled to center off relief pitcher Ashley Werschky. Stanford would up the lead to 4-0 in the seventh when Leah Nelson hit another home run over the leftfield fence off ASU's third pitcher Susan Aguilar.
The Devils would avoid the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Wright hit a solo home run to left centerfield, setting a new single-season record at ASU with 11.
Maureen LeCocq finished the last third of the seventh inning from Sorensen (15-5) who ended the day allowing only two hits, one run with nine strikeouts.
Up next, Arizona State will travel to Tucson to take on Arizona in single games on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19 both at 7:00 p.m.
