AUSTIN, Texas -- The Arizona State Men's Swimming & Diving team stands in 12th place after the second of three days of competition at the 2003 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. The team has totaled 79 points at the Jamail Texas Swim Center. Leading the way on Friday for the Sun Devils was freshman diver Joona Puhakka who placed third on the 3-meter springboard.
Puhakka, who captured the NCAA title yesterday on the 1-meter springboard, ensured a top-three finish on the 3-meter with a final round score of 642.65. Barely seven points separated first from third, with Tennessee's Phillip Jones taking first with a 649.70 and Kentucky's Clayton Moss finishing second with a 646.75. Jones finished third on both the 1-meter and 3-meter at last year's NCAAs.
In the 200 freestyle, Nick Brunelli set another career-best by clocking a 1:35.65 in the consolation final to finish 10th overall. That is the fourth-fastest time in ASU history. Yesterday, Brunelli swam a 19.58 in opening leg of the 200 freestyle relay to notch the second-fastest 50 free time in school history.
Brunelli swam the opening leg of the 800 freestyle relay (1:36.76) in the final event of the evening, where ASU touched in a season best 6:34.70 to finish 15th. Ahmed Hussein, Christian Harcsas, and David Kolozar rounded out the foursome.
Those performances represented the scoring for the Sun Devils on day two. The 200 medley relay of Hussein, Brunelli, Bobby Zaabadich, and Wiley Wallace registered a 1:29.98 in the morning prelims, missing a berth in the consolation final by 13-hundredths of a second.
Hussein recorded a time of 47.78 in this morning's 100 backstroke trials to tie for 12th in the opening session and advance to tonight's consolation final, where he was disqualified. Harcsas swam the morning session in 48.50, missing his season best by eight-hundredths of a second to finish 24th.
