FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Freshman men's diver Joona Puhakka recorded ASU's first conference title in diving since 2000 in dominating fashion this evening, winning the 3-meter event with a 640.00 point effort at the King County Aquatic Center. His nearest competitor, Ray Vincent of USC, finished with a score of 587.95. Puhakka's preliminary score of 650.70 shattered the previous ASU-best mark of 632.25 set by Mark Briggs. Briggs was the Pac-10 Champion in the same event for the Sun Devils in 2000.
The Pac-10 title keeps Puhakka's outstanding freshman season rolling, as he competes tomorrow in the 1-meter competition, an event in which he is undefeated. Sophomore Thomas McCrummen earned a fifth-place finish for ASU with a score of 519.60. The Sun Devils were the only team to place two men's divers in the top five at tonight's event.
On the women's side, Trisha Tumlinson finished fourth in the 1-meter event with a 293.65, while Jessica Stenson came in 12th, registering a 236.40 in both her preliminary and final rounds. Blythe Hartley of USC won the title with a 332.85.
The divers are back in action tomorrow, with the men taking part in the 1-meter competition while the women are on the 3-meter. Preliminaries begin at 1:00 p.m.
