TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field team participated in the Boise State Invitational Saturday and returned to Tempe with three more provisional marks for the NCAA Championships. Both Lewis Banda (Fr., Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and Seneca Holmes (Jr., Waddell, Ariz.) bettered their marks of two weeks in the provisional area with Vince Mosca (Sr., Phoenix) adding his name to the ledger in the shot put.
The women had an outstanding day as six races and field events, both preliminaries and finals included, saw a Sun Devil finish first. Porchea Carroll (So., Oxnard, Calif.) won the preliminaries and finals of the 60-meter dash with teammate Kandace Tucker (Fr., Tempe) taking second in both, though tying Carroll on time in the preliminaries. Cassandra Reed (So., Avondale, Ariz.) won the 200-meter dash while Jessica Scalzo (Fr., Snoqualmie, Wash.) captured the 5,000-meter run in her first meet. In the field events, Tiffany Greer (Sr., Powder Springs, Ga.) won the long jump and Julia Pedersen (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) took top honors in the shot put. The ladies also had five second-place and eight third-place finishes.
The Sun Devil men captured three events with the first being by another rookie, Ryan Warrenburg (Fr., Franklin, Ind.). Warrenburg, in his first collegiate race, ran an 8:35.53 to earn the win. The 4x400-meter relay team of Seth Amoo (So., Palmdale, Calif.), Banda, Jason Barton (Si., Phoenix) and Steve Fitch (Jr., San Ramon, Calif.) posted a 3:11.46 to win the relay for the second time in as many tries this year. Trevell Quinley (So., Tracy, Calif.) jumped to the top-spot with a leap of 24 feet, 6.5 inches.
In the record books, Holmes increased her No. 2 time at ASU to 8.36 while Reed and Carroll's tie atop the podium at 200-meters placed both student-athletes at No. 5 on the all-time list. The distance medley team of Lisa Aguilera (Sr., Peoria, Ariz.), Reed, Joni Smith (Sr., Long Beach, Calif.) and Tucker finished with an 11:36.33, the second best at ASU. Scalzo also made a name for herself in the books at No. 5 in the 5,000-meter run. For the men, Banda bettered his No. 3 time from two weeks ago, up from 46.86 to 46.45.
The Sun Devils head back to Flagstaff, Ariz., next week to compete in NAU's Mountain 'T' Invitational. The meet is slated for Saturday, Feb. 8, and will run all day.
