AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 14 Arizona State Women's Swimming & Diving team (4-7, 0-4 Pac-10) wrapped up their two-day dual competitions at the Jamail Texas Swim Center with defeats to No. 5 Southern Methodist 232-120 and to No. 8 Texas 236-113. ?gnes Kov?cs won the 100 breast (1:02.64) to lead the Sun Devils on Saturday.
The day started off well for the Sun Devils, with the 200 medley relay squad (1:44.35) of Florencia Szigeti, Kov?cs, Florence Mauro and Claire Hedenskog taking second-place to Texas' 200 medley relay team, who came into the meet ranked first in the nation at this event.
Swimming the 1650 free for only her second time as a Sun Devil, Kathryn Hennessy (16:57.66) took third place in the event, behind SMU's strong 1-2 tandem of Flavia Rigamonti and Marizanne Grundlingh. Rigamonti is the defending NCAA 1650 freestyle champion.
Kov?cs earned her 100 breast victory-her second first-place finish for the weekend after yesterday's 200 breast win-the race prior to Petra Banovic finishing second for the Sun Devils in the 200 fly (2:04.14). Banovic finished less than two-tenths of a second behind Texas' Alisa Schuknecht for the win.
The other top three finishes in the swimming pool for the Sun Devils, were Claire Hedenskog taking third in the 50 free (23.53) and Kov?cs taking third in the 200 IM (2:03.44).
In the diving pool, Trisha Tumlinson finished second in the 3-meter springboard (306.10) after setting a school record on Friday on the 1-meter. Jessica Stenson finished sixth (253.05) and Nicole Zukowski finished seventh (228.40) for the Sun Devils in the 3-meter competition.
The finishing order places listed above for ASU are overall finishes between Texas, SMU and ASU. Arizona State's points were tabulated as two separate dual meets with Texas and SMU. Arizona was also at the meet but did not score against the Sun Devils. ASU is off next weekend and then travels to Tucson to take on Arizona on February 15, at noon.
