STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 3 Stanford women's softball team fell to the No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devils, 4-0, tonight at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in a conference matchup. The Cardinal fall to 35-10 overall, 4-7 in the Pac-10 while the Sun Devils improve to 36-11, 6-4 in league action.
The Sun Devils jumped out to the early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first on a single by Phelan Wright and a double by Nichole Thompson. ASU scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Wright picked up her second RBI of the game.
Stanford left the bases loaded twice during the game - in the first and seventh innings.
Kristin Farber and Phelan Wright paced the Sun Devils with two hits each. Wright and Thompson each collected two RBI as well.
Senior shortstop Robin Walker led the Cardinal with two hits on the night. Kira Ching and Jessica Draemel each had one hit. Stanford left nine runners on base over the course of the game.
Cardinal junior Maureen LeCocq (14-5) took the loss for Stanford, allowing seven hits over seven innings of work with three walks and five strikeouts. Arizona State's Erica Beach (23-8) got the win for the Sun Devils, scattering two hits over five innings with five K's on the night.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Smith Family Stadium to close out league action this weekend.
