FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Led by junior All-American Tiffany Greer's first place finish in the women's long jump and freshman Trevell Quinley's runner-up effort in the men's long jump, both Arizona State's men's and women's squads stand in sixth place after day one of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships at the J. Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., Friday.
ASU's men accrued 12 points today, while the women earned 10 and are tied with Stanford, with one day left of competition tomorrow. Arizona is tops in the women's team race with 48 points, while UCLA leads the men with 41.
Greer won the women's long jump with a season best leap of 20 feet, 9.75 inches, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She also won her preliminary heat of the 60m in 7.51 seconds and advanced to tomorrow's final with the second fastest qualifying time.
Quinley also turned in an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the men's long jump with a mark of 24 feet, 11 inches, though not his season-best effort in the event. Also scoring points for ASU was junior Casey Clark who finished fifth in the men's high jump final, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 9.5 inches.
A number of ASU athletes advanced through their preliminary heats to event finals to be held tomorrow. Sophomore Steve Fitch, who won his 400m prelim heat in 47.30, owns the fastest qualifying time going into tomorrow's final. Senior Tony Galaviz won his prelim heat of the 60m hurdles in 7.90, the second fastest overall time going into finals.
Also advancing to finals were freshman Mandi Fitz-Gustafson in the women's 800m (season-best 2:19.09), sophomore Seneca Holmes in the women's 60m hurdles (8.50), junior Luiz Mello in the men's 60m (6.85), freshman Seth Amoo in the men's 200m (21.60), senior Pete Lopez in the men's 200m (season-best 21.61), and freshman Jeff Dodge in the men's 800m (1:55.68).
