TEMPE, Ariz. - Two first half goals, one by junior Patrice Feulner and the other with two minutes left before the half by freshman Manya Makoski, was all the 24th-ranked Arizona State soccer team (11-4-2; 4-3 Pac-10) needed as they defeated Washington (8-7-3; 3-3-1 Pac-10), 2-1, this afternoon at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The win was also significant in that it was the first time the Devils defeated Washington in the series six-match history.
Arizona State tallied the first goal in the 41st minute off of a two-on-one breakaway. Feulner and Makoski got behind the UW defense on a run when Makoski crossed the ball from the right wing to a breaking Feulner who then shot the ball pass Husky goalkeeper Hope Solo. Makoski's assist was her eighth on the year, tying ASU's single-season record.
Just over two minutes later at the 42:55 mark, Makoski had her own breakaway behind the UW defense and slid the ball into the lower left corner pass a diving Solo for the 2-0 lead at the half.
The Devils out shot UW, 8-4 in the first half with Solo collecting four saves. UW started the match with three straight corner kicks, but was unable to convert.
Washington broke through in the 54th minute when Dana Dibble converted on a scramble in from of the box as she blasted the ball into the upper right corner from 10 yards out. The scrambled ensued after a corner kick as several ASU and UW players vied for possession.
With 15 minutes left, UW pressured the ball towards the goal getting shots off that went high and collecting four more corners, however, that was all the scoring as ASU goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald made all three of her saves in the second half.
ASU out shot UW 15-10 with Solo posting six saves.
Up next, Arizona State ends the regular season with a trip up to the Bay Area as they face top-ranked Stanford on Friday, November 8 at 5:00 p.m. and California on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The Devils will then wait and see if they make the NCAA 64 team field when the draw is announced on Monday, November 11.
