TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State Swimming and Diving team, ranked 11th in the country in both the men's and women's polls, has completed its first day of events at a four-team meet at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz. Freshman men's diver Joona Puhakka and sophomore women's All-American swimmer ?gnes Kov?cs each earned first-place finishes in today's competition. Also competing at the meet are Wisconsin, Arizona and the Mexican National Team.
The Sun Devil men's divers had the top two finishers in the 1-meter 6-dive optionals. Puhakka scored a 355.00 to outdistance Thomas McCrummen, who finished second with a 282.65. The women divers competed on the 3-meter, with Trisha Tumlinson finishing third (271.80) and Jessica Stenson finishing fourth (257.25).
Through six swimming events, Kov?cs managed the only top-three individual finishes of the day for the women's squad. She notched a 4:19.81 in the 400 IM, finishing first and recording an NCAA "B" qualifying time in her first attempt at this event all season. She also finished second in the 100 breast (1:02.64) which was her fastest time of the year, also an NCAA "B" standard, but well off her best time as a Sun Devil (1:00.47).
As for the men's swimmers, also through six events, senior All-American Christian Harcsas got the best finish of the day, finishing second in the 100 back (50.35), while junior All-American Nick Brunelli finished third in this event (50.48). Freshman David Kolozar earned a third place finish in the 100 fly (50.13), his best time as a Sun Devil, and sophomore All-American Russell MacDonald finished third in the 100 breast (57.88), his best time this year.
Team scores were not given out at the end of day one's competition. The events resume tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
