TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State's eighth-ranked wrestling squad won six matches, including junior Eric Larkin's 12th pin of the season, en route to a 23-17 victory over Pac-10 rival Boise State at Wells Fargo Arena Saturday night.
ASU now remains undefeated on the season, improving to 3-0 overall and 3-0 versus Pac-10 opponents. Boise State remains winless, falling to 0-3 and 0-1 in the Pac-10.
The Broncos jumped on the board first with a 14-2 major decision victory by Tony D'Amico over ASU freshman Will Carr at 184 pounds, but the Sun Devils immediately evened the score when senior Erik Gladish earned his own major decision, a 10-0 win over Jacob McGinnis at 197.
At heavyweight, Sun Devil junior Kellan Fluckiger kept up with the major decision parade, defeating Boe Rushton 14-0 and giving ASU their first lead, an 8-4 advantage. BSU then jumped back into the lead with an ASU forfeit at 125 pounds.
The Broncos did not hold onto their lead for long, as senior David Douglas' 6-1 decision over Jesse Brock at 133 pounds put the Sun Devils up 11-10. Larkin extended that advantage to six points, pinning BSU's Gabe Vigil in just 2:07. Larkin, ranked No. 1 in the country at 141 pounds, now boasts a 20-1 record including 12 pins.
A 17-5 major decision by BSU's Collin Robertson over senior Quinn Foster at 149 pounds cut the ASU lead to just three points. Then it was redshirt freshman Danny Alcocer's 6-5 decision over Bronco Tyler Robertson at 157 that preserved the Sun Devils' control and received the largest ovation of the night from the crowd of 429 fans.
At 165 pounds, sophomore Nick Frost sealed the victory with a 10-3 decision over Nathan Ploehn before Boise State salvaged the final bout as Pat Owens took care of sophomore Jason Conine at 174, 10-4.
Next week ASU will face-off in a dual match with Embry-Riddle Saturday, January 12, at 2 p.m. at Peoria High School in Peoria, Ariz.
