TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State senior Pete Lopez, freshman Ryan Zimmerman and the women's distance medley team won meet titles, while sophomore Sandra Orsund earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark as the two-day Baldy Castillo Invitational wrapped up at ASU's Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., Saturday. ASU played host to over 500 athletes from 13 collegiate teams in the two-day meet.
Lopez won the men's 200m race, clocking the fastest time among 36 competitors at 21.54, finishing ahead of Notre Dame's Dwight Ellick (21.57) and Central Arizona's Marvin Anderson (21.64). Zimmerman picked up his first collegiate meet title, winning the men's triple jump with a Pac-10 qualifying leap of 48 feet, four inches. UC Santa Barbara's Adrian Dilley recorded the next best jump of 47 feet, seven inches.
ASU's women's distance medley team of freshman Desiree Davila, freshman Cassandra Reed, freshman Mandi Fitz-Gustafson and junior Cody Sohn finished ahead of teams from Indiana (12:04.76) and Louisville (12:45.89) with a time of 12:01.76.
Orsund picked up ASU's lone NCAA qualifying mark of the day, surpassing the provisional standard in the women's discus with a personal best throw of 164 feet. Senior Yolanda Meservey placed fifth with an effort of 146-1.
In the women's sprints, junior Tiffany Greer finished fourth in the 100m with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 11.77, while junior Joni Smith and senior Candida Coulson also turned in Pac-10 qualifying times, tying for sixth in the 400m in 55.09. Indiana's Rachelle Boone won both the 100m and 200m races, in 11.61 and 23.44 (NCAA provisional time), respectively.
In the men's sprints, junior Luiz Mello was ASU's highest finisher in the 100m, placing third in a Pac-10 qualifying time of 10.60. In the 400m, sophomore Steve Fitch and junior Lorenzo Parham also turned in Pac-10 qualifying efforts, placing third (47.15) and fifth (47.67), respectively.
Freshman Chris Morgan's time of 14.58 in the men's 110m hurdles placed him eighth and was also a Pac-10 qualifying time. In the men's 800m, senior Cheyne Jones was fourth in 1:53.98 and freshman Jeff Dodge was fifth in 1:54.04.
ASU's men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams each placed second in their respective races, in 40.35 and 3:08.94, respectively.
Next up, the Sun Devils will host their second home meet in as many weeks, as the Arizona State Invitational will be held Saturday, March 30, at Sun Angel Stadium. ASU will welcome men's and women's team from Air Force, Boise State and Colorado and the women's team from Oregon. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with running events to follow at 6 p.m. MT. ASU will also send athletes to the Stanford Invitational, Friday, March 29, through Saturday, March 30.
