CORVALLIS, Ore. - Arizona State wrestlers Eric Larkin, Erik Gladish and Kellan Fluckiger advanced through to tomorrow's championship finals in their respective weight classes, leading No. 13 Sun Devil wrestling to a third place standing after the first day of competition at the 2002 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships at Oregon State's Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore., Saturday.
The defending champions have 80.5 points, trailing Oregon with 90 and Boise State with 85. Host Oregon State is in fourth with 67.5 points. Nine of ASU's 10 wrestlers are still alive in the tournament.
Larkin, the No. 1 seed at 141 pounds, breezed past his first two matches, earning a 9-1 major decision over Juan Mora of Cal State Fullerton and a 8-3 decision over Boise State's Gabe Vigil. He will look to win his third Pac-10 title tomorrow when he faces Oregon's Brian Watson in the final.
Gladish and Fluckiger, the No. 1 seeds at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, also posted two wins today to advance to the finals tomorrow. Gladish picked up wins over Boise State's Jacob McGinnis (6-2) and Oregon's Jake Leair (9-2). Fluckiger, the defending heavyweight champion, has dominated his opponents, earning a 20-4 technical fall over Portland State's Eric Mustoe and a 10-0 decision over Boise State's Boe Rushton. In the finals tomorrow, Gladish will face Cal Poly's David Schenk and Fluckiger will face Oregon State's Jason Cooley.
The Sun Devils had two of their five No. 1 seeds upset in quarterfinal action in the first session of the tournament. Senior All-American and 2001 Pac-10 Champion David Douglas, who carried an overall record of 26-3 going into the tournament, was upset by Boise State's Jesse Brock 5-4 in the opening round at 133 pounds. Another title-winning hopeful, junior Rocky Smart, was pinned by Jeremiah Jarvis of UC Davis in 6:51 at 157 pounds. Both Douglas and Smart rebounded with consolation quarterfinal wins and will be aiming for third-place finishes tomorrow.
Also alive in the consolation brackets and seeking third place finishes are freshman Mike Simpson (125), freshman Evan Larkin (149), sophomore Nick Frost (165) and freshman Will Carr (184).
The 2002 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships wrap up tomorrow in Corvallis, Ore., beginning with the consolation semifinals and fifth and third-place finals at 11 a.m. PT, followed by the championship finals at 6 p.m. PT.
