FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Bolstered by today's title-winning performances from sophomore Seneca Holmes in the 60m hurdles and senior David Wood in the shot put, Arizona State's women placed fifth and the men finished sixth as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday afternoon.
Including junior Tiffany Greer's first place effort in the women's long jump yesterday, ASU's teams came away from the two-day meet with a total of three individual titles. The Sun Devil women tallied 51 points to place fifth, while the men earned 50 points to place sixth.
Winning the men's team title was UCLA (132 points), followed by Washington State (117) and Arizona (89). Arizona won the women's team title (137 points), followed by UCLA (117) and Washington State (113).
Wood won the shot put title with a personal best and NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 63 feet, four inches. After clocking the third-fastest prelim time yesterday, Holmes took first in the 60m hurdles final with a personal best 8.44 seconds (altitude adjusted), just one-hundredth of a second off the NCAA provisional standard.
Adding to the women's point total was the ASU 4x400m relay team, which crossed the finish line in second with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:40.55. In the women's 400m final, senior Candida Coulson finished third in 54.64 and junior Joni Smith was fifth in 55.04. Coulson earned an NCAA provisional time with her indoor personal best, while Smith's time was a season-best effort.
Also scoring for the ASU women were Greer in the 60m (fourth, 7.62 alt.adjusted), freshman Mandi Fitz-Gustafson in the 800m (eighth, 2:23.07), senior Nicole Simmons in the mile (sixth, 5:17.47), sophomore Jodi Smith in the high jump (fifth, 5-7) and senior Olivia Mazzaglia in the high jump (seventh, 5-7).
Two ASU men met NCAA provisional standards in their respective events as junior Vince Mosca placed seventh in the shot put with a personal best effort of 58-4 and sophomore Steve Fitch finished third in the 400m in 46.98.
Freshman Jeff Dodge finished third in the men's 800m, crossing the finish line in 1:55.37, while in the men's 200m race, freshman Seth Amoo finished fourth in 21.41 and senior Pete Lopez was eighth in 21.68. Also placing in finals today were junior Luiz Mello in the 60m (fifth, 6.89 altitude adjusted), senior Tony Galaviz in the 60m hurdles (seventh, 8.18 alt.adjusted) and freshman Ryan Zimmerman in the triple jump (seventh, 48-0.75).
Up next, ASU will send a few athletes to the Husky Last Chance Qualifier in Seattle, Wash., Saturday, March 2, while the rest of the squad will open the outdoor season hosting the Bill Sawyer Invitational in Tempe, also Saturday, March 2. Field events at Sun Angel Stadium begin at 9 a.m. MST, followed by running events at 11 a.m. MST.
