TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior center Melody Johnson scored 22 points to lead the No. 22 Arizona State women's basketball team to a 77-48 win over Delta Kosice (Slovakia) Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Arizona State took a 40-19 lead at halftime, outscoring the Slovakians 21-3 over the last 9:23 of the first half. Sophomore Betsy Boardman had 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half, while Johnson had 10.
In the second half, Delta Kosice got as close as 15 points, but Johnson had 12 points and the Sun Devils outshot their opponent 50 to 44.4 percent in the second half. A total of four Sun Devils scored in double figures in the exhibition win, led by JOhnson who was 7-of-11 from the field.
For the Sun Devils, senior Amanda Levens had 14 points and tied Boardman for the team high with five assists, while Boardman finished the night with 13 points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior Cian Carvalho also turned in double figures with 12 points. Freshman Lauren Stagg also turned in a nice game for the Sun Devils with seven points, four assistants and a pair of steals.
Arizona State, the defending Pac-10 Conference co-champion opens the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 17, taking on St. Peter's at 2:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The women's basketball game is part of a tripleheader of ASU sports that day with the men's basketball team opening the regular season at 11 a.m. with Stephen F. Austin and the women's volleyball team in action at 7:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
