TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Antoinette Marjanovic's goal in the 75th minute lifted the Arizona State soccer team (7-6-0, 1-2-0 Pac-10) to a 1-0 Pac-10 win over Oregon State (7-5-1, 0-3-0 Pac-10) tonight in front of 819 fans at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
The game was a defensive struggle for most of the evening with only minimal chances for each team to score. The Sun Devils, who were held without a shot in the first half, came out with more energy in the second half as they recorded eight shots.
Marjanovic and freshman Stephanie Peel were both playing forward when Peel passed the ball to Marjanovic. As Marjanovic caught up with the pass, Oregon State goalkeeper Jo Fletcher came out of the goal to try and block Majanovic's progress. However, Marjanovic slipped the ball pass Fletcher and hurdled her to get to the free ball where she then kicked it into the bottom right corner for the game-winner.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald made her first career start as a Sun Devil, making one critical save in the second half. The Beavers shot the ball the from about 20 yards out and as it started to float over Fitzgerald's head, the 5 foot-six inch freshman leaped up and punched the ball over the net for the save.
Up next, Arizona State will host Oregon on Sunday, October 21 at 11:30 a.m.
