TEMPE, Ariz. - Northern Arizona's Holly Jones tally in the 68th minute was the difference in a tight match as Arizona State (6-3-0) was upset, 1-0, by Northern Arizona tonight at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
The victory for the Lumberjacks was the first in the all-time series as ASU had won the previous three encounters. It was also the first loss to any instate school for the Sun Devils.
In front of 729 fans, both teams held each other scoreless in the first half as ASU out shot NAU 7-3. ASU looked like it would take the lead early in the second half. Forward Patrice Feulner's header hit off the cross bar and bounced back in front of the goal where midfielder Antoinette Marjanovic had an open goal, but shot the rebound over the goal.
NAU posted the lone score in the 68th minute. After earning a corner kick, Breann Suddock kicked the ball directly in front of the net where Jones headed it pass ASU goalkeeper Kristin Slater.
The Sun Devils tried to put together several more scoring threats, but were unable to capitalize as the team suffered its second straight shutout at home. ASU out shot NAU 16-8 and had a decisive advantage in corner kicks, 9-2.
Up next, Arizona State will travel to Southern California to face the University of San Diego on Sunday, October 7 at 12:00 p.m.
