TEMPE, Ariz. -- Despite its lowest point total of the season, the eighth-ranked Arizona State women's gymnastics team survived an upset bid by unranked California and raised its record to 6-0 in a Pac-10 dual meet Friday night. ASU defeated the Bears 191.925-190.200 before 350 fans in the first gymnastics meet at Cal's new Haas Pavilion.
The Devils took top honors in all four individual events. Kelly Christensen-Cowley remained undefeated this year on the vault by virtue of her 9.75 performance. The junior placed second on the floor exercise (9.7) behind senior teammate and fellow All-American Elizabeth McNabb, who celebrated her 22nd birthday with a winning score of 9.775. Sophomore Rhonda Robinette posted Arizona State's highest individual mark on the evening with a 9.8 in balance beam competition, while freshman Margaret Wojciak notched the first victory of her Sun Devil career by scoring a 9.7 on the uneven bars. Wojciak also posted a career-high on the beam, tying McNabb and ASU sophomore Lea Carver for second at 9.725.
Cal's Peri Oliver won the all-around competition with a cumulative score of 38.375, while no Arizona State gymnast competed as an all-arounder.
The Devils will look to extend their record over Pac-10 opponents to 3-0 when they travel to top ranked UCLA on Friday, Jan. 28 for a 7:00 p.m. (PST) dual meet.
