Men's Golfer Canizares Named To Palmer Cup Squad

The European team for the 2003 Palmer Cup has been announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The European team will compete against the U.S. July 7-11 at The Kiawah Island Club's Cassique course in Kiawah Island, S.C. Keith Williams (English Golf Union) and Peter Mattsson (Swedish Golf Union) will coach the European squad.

The European team will consist of Arizona State freshman Alejandro Canizares and Gonzalo Casta?o of Spain; Sweden's P?r Nilsson and Wilhelm Schauman; and David Inglis, David Price, David Skinns and Oliver Wilson of the United Kingdom. Ca?izares (Arizona State), Inglis (Tulsa), Nilsson (Oklahoma State), Schauman (Minnesota), Skinns (Tennessee) and Wilson (Augusta State) compete collegiately in the United States.

Canizares has a 71.42 stroke average in six events this year. His stroke average is currently the best by a freshman in school history with two events to play. Todd Demsey set the school mark with a 72.10 mark in 1991-92. ASU, ranked 17th in the May 7 Precept Coaches Poll, plays in the NCAA West Regional May 15-17 at Washington and the NCAA Championships are May 27-30 in Stillwater, Okla.

The U.S. team leads the Palmer Cup Series, 4-1-1, and has won all three matches in the United States.
