Men's Golf Plays Host To Thunderbird Invitational On Friday And Saturday

KARSTEN TO HOST THUNDERBIRD INVITATIONAL: The Arizona State men's golf team plays host on April 9-10 (Friday-Saturday) to the 32nd annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (par-72, 7,037 yards). The 15 schools will play 36 holes on Friday, April 9, followed by a final round on Saturday, April 10. ASU has won four of the past five (1999-2001, 2003) Thunderbird Invitationals and has won the tournament 11 of the past 15 years. Last year, ASU shot a tournament record 40-under 824 to beat USC by eight strokes while David Schultz of TCU won medalist honors with a 15-under 201 (68-66-67).

SUN DEVIL HISTORY: ASU has won the Thunderbird Invitational 12 times (1984, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003). Eight times Sun Devils have won the individual title: Mark Sollenberger (1974), Jim Carter (1984), Phil Mickelson (1991 and 1992), Larry Barber (1994), Todd Demsey (1995), Jeff Quinney (1999) and Paul Casey (2000).

COMPETING SCHOOLS: The 15 competing schools are: Arizona, ASU (two teams), BYU, California, New Mexico, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Stanford, Texas Tech, UNLV, USC, UTEP and Washington. There will be a shotgun start on Friday at 7:30 a.m. while Saturday's regular tee-times from holes 1 and 10 will begin at 7 a.m.

ASU QUICK NOTES: ASU has finished first or second at its tournament every year beginning with 1994, a streak of 10 straight Thunderbird Invitationals...Paul Casey is the last Sun Devil to win the tournament with his 9-under 207 in 2000...ASU has won three tournaments this year (New Mexico's Tucker Intercollegiate, UNLV's Southern Highlands Championship and the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson), its most since the 2000-2001 team also won three. The 1999-2000 Sun Devils won four tournaments...senior Chez Reavie has six top-10 finishes on the year and 20 in his four-year career. Reavie finished at 10-under 206 and tied for fifth at last year's Thunderbird Invitational. He did not compete in 2002 as he was competing in the Masters via his 2001 U.S. Public Links Championship. He tied for 29th with a 2-under 214 in his freshman year (2001)...ASU has finished in the top five at the NCAAs in five of the past nine years and has won the Pac-10 title six of the past nine years. The Sun Devils also won national championships in 1990 and 1996. ASU is led by 12th-year head coach Randy Lein, the 1996 National Coach of the Year and a seven-time winner of Pac-10 Coach of the Year (five times at ASU and twice at USC)...Reavie's 71.17 stroke average is the best since Paul Casey posted a 69.87 average in 1999-2000.

ASU HEAD COACH Randy Lein: Randy Lein has coached 59 tournament victories in his 22 seasons, tutored 43 All-Americans and added the top accolade in collegiate golf in 1995-96 - the NCAA title - to his collection as the Sun Devils won the title in Chattanooga, Tenn., with a three-stroke victory over UNLV at the Honors Course. In his 12th season as ASU's coach, Lein has guided ASU to 36 tournament victories (including a school record six in 1995-96), seven Pac-10 titles, four NCAA West Regional wins (three of the past four) and eight top-10 finishes at the NCAAs including the 1996 title. In addition, Lein has tutored NCAA medalist Todd Demsey and 11 All-Americans (23 occasions): Todd Demsey (3), Chris Hanell (3), Paul Casey (3), Cade Stone, Chris Stutts, Joey Snyder (2), Scott Johnson (2), Darren Angel (2), Paul Casey (3), Jeff Quinney (3), Matt Jones and Chez Reavie (1). He has won Pac-10 Coach-of-the-Year five times (1993, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000) while at ASU and twice at USC (1980 and 1986). Lein (pronounced "Line") is a 1975 graduate of Cal State Northridge.

CAREER NOTES ON SENIOR Chez Reavie: The 2001 U.S. Public Links Champion...a top-10 finisher in 20 of 39 career events...has finished in the top 10 in 15 of his past 23 tournaments...also won the 2001 Mesa City Championship by eight strokes...tied for fourth at the 2001 NCAA Championships after shooting a 7-under 281 (71-67-74-69).
