TEMPE, Ariz. - The USA Track and Field Championships, for both junior and senior competitors, was held June 20-22 at Stanford with six members of the Arizona State track and field team taking part in the event. The meet was held by the USA Track and Field Organization to determine the nation's participants in the 2003 World Outdoor Championships August 23-31 in Paris as well as the 2003 Pan Am Junior Championships set for July 18-20 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
In the junior division, freshman Amy Hastings (Leavenworth, Kan.) won the women's 5,000m run with a USA Junior meet record time of 16:28.60. With her time, Hastings earned a spot on the US junior team that will compete in Barbados at the end of July. The international berth for Hastings marks her second of the year as she finished 20th overall and was the first American finisher in the World Junior Cross Country Championships earlier this year. Also competing in the junior division was freshman Becky Holley (Lakeside, Calif.). Holley captured 17th place in the women's javelin with a throw of 37.59m (123-4).
Lisa Aguilera (Peoria, Ariz.), coming off a highly successful collegiate campaign and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships one week earlier, competed in the women's 3,000m steeplechase and finished fourth at 9:49.15. Tiffany Greer (Powder Springs, Ga.), who also ended her collegiate eligibility one week prior to the USA meet, finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.32m (20-9.00). Sandra Orsund (Plymouth, Ind.) finished 20th in the women's discus with a throw of 41.55m (136-4) while Vince Mosca (Phoenix, Ariz.), the lone Sun Devil male to compete, captured 17th in the shot put with a heave of 18.06m (59-3.00).
