Greer Finishes Runner-Up In Long Jump In Day Two Of NCAA Championships

May 30, 2002

BATON ROUGE, La. - Arizona State junior Tiffany Greer finished runner-up in the women's long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 3.25 inches in the second day of the 2002 NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by LSU at Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., Thursday.

Greer notched a personal-best outdoor mark, finishing second only to Auburn's Elva Goulbourne, who captured the NCAA title with a jump of 22-4.5, and placing ahead of rival Brianna Glenn of Arizona who jumped 21-0.50.

Greer improved upon two-straight third-place national finishes, at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships and at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships. Greer is a two-time Pac-10 champion in the long jump, having won the 2002 and 2000 titles, and has now garnered six All-America honors in the event, three indoors and three outdoors. Her personal-best long jump mark indoors is 21-4, an ASU record.

With Greer's eight points for her second-place finish, the Sun Devil women are in a six-way tie for 13th through seven scored events. UCLA leads the team race (25 points), followed by Washington State (16) and Kansas State (13).

Also competing for the ASU women today, junior Lisa Aguilera clocked a personal-best time of 10:05.38 in the women's 3000m steeplechase preliminaries and advanced to the final held Saturday at 9:10 p.m. CT.

For the men, the only Sun Devil competing in a final was junior Fasil Bizuneh who placed 15th in the men's 10,000m race this evening. Bizuneh, who finished sixth in last year's race, recorded a time of 30:34.71. His personal-best and school record, set earlier this season, stands at 28:46.88.

Advancing through their preliminary races were senior Brandon Strong -- one of two Sun Devils in ASU history to run a sub-four minute mile -- in the men's 1500m (second in his heat in 3:41.54), senior Tony Galaviz in the men's 110m hurdles (13.98) and the men's 4x400m relay team (season-best 3:05.63). Galaviz will compete in the 110m hurdle semifinals Friday at 8:20 p.m. CT, while Strong runs in the 1500m final Saturday at 8 p.m. CT. The men's 4x400m relay team will also compete Saturday in the final, at 9:25 p.m. CT. The ASU men have not yet scored any points in the team race.

The 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue tomorrow in Baton Rouge. In addition to Galaviz, competing Friday for ASU will be junior Brianna Torres in the women's 5000m final at 9:10 p.m CT.
