Sun Devil Stadium hosted the Fiesta Bowl from 1971 to 2006, when it moved to what was known then as University of Phoenix Stadium. After relocating from St. Louis in the 1988 season, Sun Devil Stadium became home to both the Sun Devils and the NFL’s Phoenix Cardinals, later renamed the Arizona Cardinals in 1994. The Cardinals resided in Sun Devil Stadium until 2006 when they moved to Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium.

The expansion of 1988, which added a large seating section that completed the oval of the stadium, added almost 1,700 seats to the stadium's capacity. Also added was the Intercollegiate Athletic Complex at the structure's south end, which is now named the Nadine and Ed Carson Student Athlete Center. The building houses the entire realm of the ASU athletic department. A state-of-the-art scoreboard and four-color video replay board were also added.

Sun Devil Stadium hosts Super Bowl XXX. The Cowboys defeated the Steelers 27-17 in front of 76,347 fans. Diana Ross hosted the halftime show.

The field within Sun Devil Stadium was named Frank Kush Field on Sept. 21, 1996. In one of the greatest nights in college football history, the game marked the first time since 1977 that a top-ranked team was shutout as ASU defeated Nebraska 19-0. The win enhanced a magical night as Coach Kush was honored and hundreds of his former players were in attendance.

Sun Devil Stadium hosts the inaugural BCS Championship game with a stadium record crowd of 80,470.

Pat's Run is a 4.2-mile run/walk that honors Pat Tillman, a former NFL and Arizona State University football player who died in Afghanistan in 2004. The race is the signature fundraiser for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships to military veterans and their spouses. The inaugural Pat’s Run in 2005 sees more than 5,500 participants complete the 4.2 mile run/walk by crossing the 42-yard line in Sun Devil Stadium.

In May 2009, President Barack Obama visited ASU to deliver a commencement speech at the university's graduation ceremony. President Obama spoke to more than 8,000 graduates, their families, and university staf.
