TEMPE, Ariz. -- Eight Arizona State swimmers make the trip to Indianapolis this week for the 2003 ConocoPhillips Spring National Championships held at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. Over 800 individual athletes are slated to compete in the long course meters event from April 1-5.
Four men and four women from the Sun Devil squad will compete this week. Nick Brunelli (50m free), Christian Harcsas (100m back, 200m back), Ahmed Hussein (100m back, 200m back), and David Kolozar (100m fly, 200m fly) go from the men' squad. Petra Banovic (100m free, 200m free, 200m back, 200m IM), Claire Hedenskog (50m free), ?gnes Kov?cs (100m breast, 200m breast, 200m IM, 400m IM), and Florencia Szigeti (50m free, 100m free, 200m free, 100m back) represent the women.
Many Sun Devils enter the meet with high seeds, including five events with swimmers in the top ten and six events with swimmers in the top 15. David Kolozar goes into the meet listed as the No. 2 entrant in the 200m butterfly with a long course seed time of 1:58.33, behind only Japan's Takashi Yamamoto, the 2001-02 FINA World Cup champion in the 200m fly. Using standard time conversion factors, Kolozar's long course meters time converts to a very fast 1:44.13 in short-course yards, the distance used by the NCAA.
In the 200m backstroke, Ahmed Hussein enters the meet with a No. 8 seed (2:01.47) while Christian Harcsas is No. 11 (2:02.74) in a field that includes Olympic gold medalist Lenny Krayzelburg and 2001 U.S. Swimmer of the Year Michael Phelps.
Hussein is entered with the sixth-fastest time in the 100m back with a 56.16 and Harcsas is in the race by virtue of his 48.42 short course yards time he recorded this season at the Texas Invitational. This event features three of the top backstrokers in the world in Krayzelburg, and Stanford's Randall Bal and Peter Marshall.
Nick Brunelli, a member of the 2003 U.S. Pan American Games team, comes into the 50m free at the Spring Nationals with a 23.46 seed time, listing him in 14th.
On the women's side, ?gnes Kov?cs is listed in the top four in two of her four events. The psyche sheet for the 200m breaststroke lists her at No. 2 going into the meet with a 2:28.00 and No. 4 in the 100m breast with a 1:09.32. She is the reigning Olympic gold medalist and World Champion in the 200m breaststroke.
The women are also entered in the 400m free relay and the 400m medley relay.
