Highlighted by a career-best performance by junior CJ Nuess in the 400 individual medley consolation finals and another solid contribution from redshirt freshman Micky Benedetti in the three-meter diving consolation finals, No. 21 Arizona State University concluded day two of the 2007 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
After establishing a career-best time in the 400 IM at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships in February, Nuess surpassed that mark, touching in 3:47.28, also good for the second-fastest time in the event in Sun Devil history. The Medical native also placed 10th overall in the nation in the event, earning the junior seven points toward ASU's overall total. In the event's preliminary round, Nuess touched in 3:48.36, placing 14th, earning him a spot in Friday evening's consolation finals round.
Also scoring for the Sun Devils Friday was Benedetti, who for the second night in a row added to the team's points total with an excellent performance in the three-meter diving consolation finals round. Totaling a score of 401.10, the Pac-10 Conference three-meter and platform diving champion placed 10th overall Friday evening after placing 12th in the event's preliminary round, earning a score of 351.85.
Freshman Ante Cvitkovic made his NCAA Championship debut Friday, swimming in the 100 backstroke preliminary round, finishing in 48.13, one of his best times of the season, also good for 24th overall.
Sophomore Gal Nevo competed in the 400 IM preliminary rounds as well, touching in 3:52.87, placing him 22nd overall.
Junior Lucas Azevedo participated in the 200 freestyle preliminary rounds, however he was disqualified due to a false start.
Following the conclusion of the second of three days of action at the 2007 NCAA Championships, the Sun Devils are placed 25th overall, having scored 18 points.
ASU will wrap up the NCAA Championships Saturday, as Cvitkovic will compete in the 200 backstroke, while Nevo and Nuess will take action in the 1650 freestyle and Benedetti will look to continue to score as a platform diving competitor.
