Baseball Downs New Mexico, 12-7

Casey Myers leads the way offensively with five runs batted in.

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 13th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (33-16, 18-8 Six-Pac) defeated the New Mexico Lobos (20-28) 12-7 this evening in front of a crowd of 1,211 at Packard Stadium.

The Devils scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second, and never relinquished their lead. Leading the Devils offensively was freshman Casey Myers, who finished the evening 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Myers' four hits also included his seventh home run of the season. Also leading ASU was third baseman Andrew Beinbrink who went 2-for-3 with two runs a piece driven in and scored. Sophomore lead-off hitter Willie Bloomquist also contiuned his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 outing, including two runs scored. Starting pitcher Chad Pennington (4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season for the Devils, going seven innings, giving up only three earned runs on five hits. Pennington also struck out a career-high 11 batters on the evening.

For the Lobos, third baseman Aaron Sisk led New Mexico offensively with a 2-for-3 outing, knocking in two runs and scoring two. Cory Robbins also contributed with a 2-for-5 outing with a run driven in and one scored. Starting pitcher J.C. Ortiz (1-2) picked up the loss for UNM, going one and two-thirds of an inning giving up six hits and four earned runs. Ortiz also walked four ASU batters.

The Sun Devils will face New Mexico tomorrow night at 7 p.m. for the final game of the two game series at Packard Stadium. For ticket information, please call 965-2381.
