TEMPE – David Dumble, an assistant coach for the Arizona State University track and field program, has been named the 2010 U.S. Track & Field, Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men’s West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, the Association announced Tuesday. Dumble is one of 72 athletes and coaches to earn regional recognition in a vote by coaches and is now eligible for the national honor.
In the midst of his ninth season with the Sun Devils, Dumble was selected as the top men’s assistant coach in the west region after once again seeing two of his throwers earn automatic berths into the NCAA Indoor Championships with both ranking highly in the nation and the world as well. Dumble has worked with Ryan Whiting, the two-time defending indoor shot put champion, and Jason Lewis, the defending national champion in the weight throw, while also coaching redshirt freshman Jordan Clarke to the 16th-best mark in the nation in the shot put.
Whiting, with a mark of 21.52m, currently leads the nation and is ranked No. 3 in the world. He recently competed in the USATF Indoor Championships and took second place, qualifying to represent the U.S. at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar, which takes place this weekend while Whiting will be with the Sun Devils in Arkansas for the NCAA Championships. Lewis, who recorded a mark of 21.92m, enters the national meet this weekend with the fourth-best toss this season while also ranking No. 13 internationally.
The honor for Dumble is his fourth as the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year and his first as the men’s recipient after earning the honor three times with the women. He was first honored in 2006 as the women’s outdoor assistant coach of the year for the West and then earned the same award both indoors and outdoors in 2008. Dumble also is a three-time USTFCCCA National Assistant Coach of the Year, earning the honor outdoors for women’s throws in 2006 and 2007 and then for indoor throws in 2008.
Dumble, his two throwers and the rest of those Sun Devils that qualified will compete at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships this Friday and Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
