TEMPE – The NCAA announced the field of competitors for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships that will be held inside the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas, this Friday and Saturday with Arizona State University qualifying four individuals and one relay to the national meet.
The Sun Devil women qualified three individuals in Jasmine Chaney in the 200m dash, Anna Jelmini in the shot put and Christabel Nettey in the long jump while the men’s lone representative will be Jordan Clarke in the shot put. Chaney, along with Sarah Geren, Keia Pinnick and Kayla Sanchez, combined to qualify the women’s 4x400m relay.
Of all the Sun Devils, Nettey is ranked the highest as she stands fourth on the order list in the long jump after she jumped 6.44m (21-01.50) to win the MPSF Indoor Championships two weeks ago and automatically qualify for the NCAA meet. The 4x400m relay, also an automatic qualifier, is just behind Nettey with a time of 3:33.72 that ranks them fifth overall.
Chaney is ranked eighth in the 200m dash with her NCAA automatic qualifying-time of 23.16. Both shot put athletes qualified as at-large selections with Jelmini ranking 14th overall in the women’s event with her season-best of 16.68m (54-08.75) while Clarke is 15th in the men’s event with his mark of 18.67m (61-03.00).
The Championships will begin on Friday with Nettey and Clarke competing in the trials and finals of the long jump and shot put, respectively, while Chaney will run in the preliminary round of the 200m dash. If she qualifies for the finals, she will run again on Friday night in the final. On Saturday, Jelmini and 4x400m relay will compete in the finals of their respective events.
