ASU Long Jumper Quinley Named Pac-10 Field Athlete of the Week

April 12, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. - After winning the 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays while recording the top mark by an American long jumper this year, Trevell Quinley, a member of the No. 5 Arizona State University track and field team, was selected as the Pac-10 Athlete of the Week for Men's Field Events, the conference announced April 11. The mark came in Quinley's first outdoor event of the outdoor season.

The national indoor runner-up this season, Quinley (Sr., Tracy, Calif.) recorded a mark of 8.17m (26-09.75) to easily win the event and put distance between himself and the rest of the collegiate field. So far in 2005, Quinley is the only collegian to leap over eight meters. He also moved into second on the ASU all-time Top 10, just five centimeters behind the school's record holder, 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Dwight Phillips (8.21m) and became the sixth Sun Devil to break the 8-meter barrier.

The remaining athletes to earn weekly honors from the Pac-10 this week were John Rankin of UCLA (track, mile run), Virginia Powell of USC (track, 100m hurdles) and Diana Pickler of Washington State (field, heptathlon).

Quinley and the Sun Devils will play host to the 26th Sun Angel Classic presented by Coca-Cola this Saturday with field events opening at 8 a.m. and running events set for 4 p.m. Several members of the team also will compete at the Mesa Classic this Friday at Mesa Community College.
