ASU in Action This Weekend

This Weekend: The eighth-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team hosts The University of Nevada Las Vegas and Washington State University. Saturday at 10 a.m., the Sun Devils (4-0; 2-0 Pac-10) and No. 37 UNLV (3-0 overall) will square off at the Whiteman Tennis Center. Budapest, Hungary marks the homeland of both top players for these teams. The Rebels' Susie Kocsis is 2-1 in singles this season and has helped lead her team to a perfect record so far. Reka Cseresnyes is ranked 30th in the nation and too has lead her team to a perfect record. In doubles look for a clash between top teams when No. 4 Kocsis and Gee Gee Garvin take on the Sun Devils' duo of Stephanie Lansdorp and Katy Propstra. Kocsis and Garvin have posted a record of 9-5, while Lansdorp and Propstra are 8-2.

Sunday, the Washington State Cougars roar into Tempe for a noon match with the Sun Devils. WSU (0-2; 0-2) lost to two top-ranked teams, No. 7 California, 1-5, and No. 5 Stanford, 0-6. The Cougars are lead by Tunde Nagy and No. 81 Erica Perkins. Nagy and Perkins posted an 11-6, and 9-4 tournament record respectively.

Last Match: No. 8 Arizona State Upsets No. 2 UCLA and Defeats No. 26 USC

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The eighth-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team upset the second-ranked team of UCLA and topped No. 26 Southern California this weekend at the Whiteman Tennis Center on the campus of Arizona State University.

Friday, the Bruins and Sun Devils (4-0: 2-0 Pac-10 South) matched each other point for point until the final doubles match between UCLA's Cristina Popescu and Elizabeth Schmidt and ASU's duo of Katy Propstra and Stephanie Lansdorp. The 8-5 victory by the Sun Devils' pair locked up the match for Arizona State giving them a narrow 5-4 victory and upsetting the No. 2 team in the country. This marks the second time in as many years that the Sun Devils have upset the Bruins when they came to Tempe.

Saturday, the Sun Devils proved to be too much for the Women of Troy defeating them 6-3.

Junior Alison Nash prevailed in impressive fashion defeating USC's Karolina Bakalarova 6-4, 6-0. ASU Freshman Celena McCoury opened her collegiate dual match career with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Amber Basica.

Defeating USC 6-3, ASU notched their fourth victory of the season and second of the Pac-10. The Trojans fell to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10.

Coming Up: Arizona State vs. Arizona, 1 p.m. Saturday, February 28 at the Whiteman Tennis Center, the Sun Devils and Wildcats will battle for state supremacy. Formerly ranked No.1 (in 1997), Vicky Maes leads No. 23 Arizona.
