Arizona State University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams showcased several impressive individual performances during a weekend of challenging Pacific-10 Conference competition at USC, however both squads came up short against the Trojans. ASU's No. 22 women's team fell to the No. 6 Women of Troy Saturday, 169-125, while the No. 22 Sun Devil men were bested by the No. 8 Trojans over the course of a two-day, 16-event competition, with the final tally reading 107-33.
Highlighting the effort of the Sun Devil women was the continued success of junior All-American Caitlin Andrew, who earned individual victories in the 100 free (50.74) and the 100 fly (55.14). Andrew's 100 freestyle finish stands as the top time in that event by a Sun Devil swimmer this season.
Senior diver Cassidy Farwell provided a spark to the Sun Devils' overall scoring effort, by out-performing the competition with victories in both the 1m (235.50) and 3m (277.95) springboard diving events.
Andrew was joined by sophomore Jen Beckberger, senior Abra Armour and junior Lindsey Brown as the owners of the day's fastest 200 freestyle relay (1:33.74), also the fastest time in that event for the Sun Devils to date in the 2006-07 season. The Sun Devils also recorded two of the top three 200 medley relays of the meet.
Beckberger also provided solid individual performance for ASU, placing first in the 50 free (23.81) and second in the 200 free (1:51.01).
The Sun Devils also showcased scoring performances by a variety of swimmers on the day, as ASU recorded three of the top four finishes in both the 200 fly and the 200 breast, led by a second-place finish by senior Jill Kripps and a third-place finish by freshman Ashton Aubry in the 200 fly, and a second- and third-place times in the 200 breast by sophomore Amy Konwalik and senior Christine Creek, respectively. Also, the Sun Devils finished two of the top three swimmers in the 200 free and 100 breast, which inlcluded a third-place finish by junior Lindsey Brown in the 200 free, and second- and third-place times in the 100 breast by freshmen Ashley Evans and Sara McDaniel, respectively.
Junior All-American Lucas Azevedo led the charge for the men's side during the team's second day in action against the Trojans, placing third in the 500 free, and joined teammates freshman Steve Neuwart and sophomores Sean Boyle and Mohammed Madwa as members of the third-best 400 free relay of the day.
Redshirt freshman diver Micky Benedetti performed excellently yet again, placing first in the 3m (368.02) and second in the 1m (319.25).
ASU's men's and women's swimming and diving teams will next travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the Texas Invitational, held Nov. 30 through Dec. 2.
