Arizona State University All-American juniors Caitlin Andrew and Lucas Azevedo earned victories in the Sun Devils' annual Pentathlon event held Saturday afternoon at ASU's Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex.
In the Pentathlon, each swimmer participated in five events, including the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 100 individual medley. The lowest time of the five combined events won the Pentathlon.
Andrew () led the women's team, as she did as a sophomore in last year's Pentathlon, after winning four of the five Pentathlon events. ASU's all-time record holder in three individual events, Andrew posted times of 56.06 in the 100 butterfly, 57.57 in the 100 backstroke, 50.85 in the 100 freestyle and 2:06.09 in the 100 IM. Freshman Ashley Evans () won the 100 breaststroke, touching in a time of 1:05.99. Sophomore Jen Beckberger (, ), Evans, senior (, ) and senior Amanda Gillespie () all rounded out the top five finishers for ASU's women's team. Newcomers freshman Ashton Aubry () and junior Lindsey Russenberger (Marana, Ariz.) also contributed in some of their first action as Sun Devils.
Lucas Azevedo (, ) paced the men's squad, followed by teammates junior CJ Nuess (, ), freshman Max Laney (, ) and sophomore Sean Boyle (). Azevedo placed first in the 100 butterfly (51.05) and the 100 freestyle (46.79), while finishing second in the 100 IM and third in the 100 backstroke. Nuess, an NCAA qualifier last season, led the team in the 100 breaststroke (58.88) and the 100 IM (1:51.83). Freshman Ante Cvitkovic () recorded the best 100 backstroke time of the day for the men's team, finishing in 53.17. ASU also saw contributions from newcomers junior Steve Neuwart (, ) and freshman Marin Naranca (), who will both be counted on frequently this season.
The Sun Devils officially begin the 2006-07 season on Friday, Oct. 20 against UNLV at ASU's Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex.
