Devils Bend But Don’t Break, Drop CU In Boulder
D.J. Foster racked up more than 200 all-purpose yards for the second consecutive game and the Sun Devils’ defense forced three turnovers in a 38-24 victory over Colorado on Saturday at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo.
ASU, which improved to 6-0 all-time against the Buffaloes, has won three of its past four Pac-12 openers and seven of its past 11 conference road openers.
Foster rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown and added four receptions for 59 yards and another touchdown to account for 206 of ASU’s 426 total yards of offense. This marked the eighth straight game Foster has scored in and his 13th touchdown in that span.
Quarterback Taylor Kelly finished 13-of-21 for 195 yards and three touchdowns, including a 50-yard touchdown run to put the Devils up by 21 points midway through the third quarter, before he left the game with a leg injury later in the half.
The Sun Devil defense gave up 545 yards of total offense, but forced three takeaways and three turnovers on downs. Safety Jordan Simone led the way with an interception and a forced fumble, with both turnovers leading to touchdowns, and added team-high 13 tackles. Three players recorded double-digit tackles for the first time under head coach Todd Graham, as safety Damarious Randall recorded 11 and linebacker Antonio Longino notched a career-best 10.
ASU also got it done on special teams with Matt Haack punting seven times for 337 yards and a 48.1 average that ranked as the third highest single-game yards per punt average in Graham’s tenure at ASU and the most since Oct. 27, 2012 against UCLA.
The Buffaloes trailed by just two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter and were driving into Sun Devil territory, but freshman linebacker Christian Sam picked up the first interception of his career with 4:44 left in regulation to stifle the CU rally and secure the win.
Sefo Liufau completed 31 of 46 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns for CU, but the Buffaloes could not avoid their 15th consecutive loss to a ranked team.
